Busy Bee

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

I know I’ve been slacking off here, but when you’re bogged down with multiple clients and finally beginning to get somewhere with your business – the blogging aspect of things really doesn’t matter too much.  Well, it’s not that it doesn’t matter but it certainly doesn’t take first priority either.  I do like having an emotional outlet but lately I’ve put that into my private journal.  Which any tech-nerd would despise because it’s hand written.  It’s not based on some funky blog script heh.

My new contract position is working out pretty nicely.  It’s given me the ability to expand beyond the weblog template world so I can prove that I do actually know a thing or two about graphics design.  It feels as though something has shifted and the dark cloud hovering over me has now made it’s way out of town.

Even though I’ve been pulling 12 hour days, I still have the time (and the energy) to get all of my work done both online and offline.  I can still keep up on my daily routine (chores – so to speak) and I’ve spent quite a bit of time down on the beach to keep feeding my inspiration.  I also use this as my time to exercise.  So yes, I’ve not only kept myself busy but I’ve kept myself on my diet as well.  Isn’t that just fantastic?

Staying Fit

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

As you may or may not know, I’ve been on a pretty strict diet for the last 10 months and I’ve been doing pretty well with it. Not only have I lost 55 pounds, I know that I’ll reach my 75lb goal sometime within the next couple of months. Just in time for summer! There were a lot of resources around the Internet that helped me to get through the past year and I have to say that I wouldn’t have gotten through this without it. While it’s not exactly a ‘weight loss’ resource, I found a site online that’s helpful in regards to general fitness supplies. When AllegroMedical initially hit the Internet, they offered up medical equipment and home health care supplies. They’ve done very well and have since expanded and are now offering Exercise & Fitness Equipment as well as Nutritional Dietary Supplements.

Their website is really easy to navigate, I found something kind of cool called Superfeet. It’s an Insole that’s great for anyone who’s into Skiing, Snowboarding, Running, Hiking & Walking. It’s great for support, balance and shock absorption. And at only $31 it’s a great price for someone who goes on as many walks as I do. I’m outside for about an hour a day, I bring Bella along with me and she’s absolutely loving all the exercise as well. She hasn’t been feeling very well for the last couple of days so she’s refused to leave the house when I have my walking-gear on but that’s OK, it’ll warm up and she’ll want to join me once she’s feeling up to it.

For those days when I’m in the house, I’ve been considering the BOSU Balance Trainer I can still get my strength training but I don’t have to head down to the gym in the complex to do it. It’s so stuffy down there, and since it’s such a small room with only 3 different exercise machines, it really gets rather boring. I can use the balance trainer in the privacy of my own room and I don’t have to worry about dealing with the really icky smell that the clubhouse is known for.

Thank goodness for the Internet.

$8 RX Glasses

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

While I absolutely hate to admit it, part of me believes that I’m beginning to lose my eyesight. When you look at a screen all day long and rarely focus on anything else, things just don’t work as well as they used to. I still have better eyesight than anyone I know, probably because I come from a family where almost everyone needs glasses in order to see, and my sister is one of them but she’ll NEVER admit to it until she’s completely blind and attempting to drive somewhere. My father on the other hand, he’s needed glasses on and off for quite some time to read and now he really can’t do much of anything without his glasses. Up until he was about 30 years-old he never needed them, he had better than 20/20 vision, now things are so blurred for him that he’s more than likely going to be blind at some point later on down the road.

Another person with really bad eye sight is Sean and unfortunately he doesn’t have medical insurance to even get his glasses fixed, let alone update the prescription in general. I do believe that with my search I landed upon what I believe to be a great discovery. They’re called Zenni Optical and they sell prescription glasses online. There’s a huge selection of frames with everything from single vision lenses to bifocals. They even have tinted sunglasses for those who need corrective sunglasses as well. I guess no one likes the “clip on” look anymore…heh. They sell internationally too, so no matter where you’re located you can still get the prescription you need.

The link that really caught my attention (the reason I found this company) $ 8 Zenni Optical Rx Eyeglasses when you see a link like that you’re initial thought is “Okay, scam time” but they really aren’t. If you read through reviews on their website you’ll find that 99% of the time, consumers whom have gone through their services have a 100% recommendation to friends and family members when it comes to going back to this company – time and time again.

It’s too bad that I can’t order anything for Sean yet, he hasn’t had an eye-exam in a few years and he’s due for another one before he can even consider picking up a new pair of glasses. Hell, maybe if insurance works out properly we’ll be able to pick up some contacts for him instead. Either way something needs to be done, right?

Lawsuits don’t stick

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

While I hate the idea of a lawsuit, I know that sometimes they’re very important. A few years ago my a family member of mine went in for surgery on both of their ankles. She’d had trouble walking for many, many years and when things got to be too much to handle she decided to have something done about it. The surgeon was a little full of himself and instead of paying close attention to important details, he kind of went quick with it and managed to cut a nerve or two and did nothing to repair them. A lawsuit was filed when a nurse filled in my family member about what’d happened. There was a huge uproar in the surgical room in regards to this. He, being a jerk, really didn’t care and quickly sewed the nerves back together, the problem is now they don’t function properly and are causing a lot of problems.

A lawsuit was filed against him but since he was supposedly the top surgeon in the hospital, they were the ones responsible for flipping the bill. In order to protect a reputation they continued a long drawn out process of prolonging all of the paperwork and went through numerous other legal loopholes that they jumped through. By the time anything was brought to court, the doctor had no recolection of anything happening, this was a good four years after the fact, and the judge decided that nothing could be done. Nevermind the fact that someone is now incapable of walking due to his botch-job!

She wasn’t suing for millions of dollars, she wanted the cost of rehabilitation and medical bills to be covered, and possibly some pain and suffering thrown into that. It was only a $200,000 lawsuit, considering $140,000 went to medical bills I think asking for $60,000 for pain and suffering, from a multi-million dollar hospital is fairly reasonable. She knew that if she won the case she’d have to deal with a yearly payment as opposed to the full amount so she was looking into different corporations to help her to receive a Structured Settlement.

The point of Structured Settlements is to receive a lump sum of cash for your payments towards paying off credit cards and other bills, eliminating debt and reducing your medical bills. So if she were actually lucky enough to win the case, and not be robbed of her basic freedoms – such as the ability to walk – she could have easily fixed all of her money problems.

I hate law, I really do.

Poor Thing

For the past week I’ve been treating a double ear infection with Bella.  The right ear seems to be healing pretty well but unfortunately the left ear isn’t making any progress.  The progress it IS making, is on the line of getting worse.  I don’t know why the medication is working in one ear and not the other but I really wish that I could figure something out.  There are two different kinds of medication to choose from, the one the doctor prescribed for her, and the one that was prescribed for another dog in the house.  At this point, with no progress in the left ear, I’m considering using the other medication.  She could have an allergy to the one she’s currently using now, but if that were the case then the other ear wouldn’t be healing.

It doesn’t help that she’s scratching at her ear either, no matter how much gunk I clean out of her ears she’s still got globs of nasty things coming out no matter how many times a day I clean her ears.  A few moments ago it was the second time today that I went into her ears to clean them, it’s about the 14th time in the course of the last week that it’s been done.  When you look at the q-tip, you would assume right off the bat that I hadn’t done anything for her in months.  It’s truly not the case, it’s just a nasty infection that shows no sign of lightening up anytime soon.

It’s really getting hard to deal with and I only hope that something begins to work so that I can avoid a $1,000 vet bill for all kinds of infection-removing procedures that the vet would charge me for.
