Staying Fit

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

As you may or may not know, I’ve been on a pretty strict diet for the last 10 months and I’ve been doing pretty well with it. Not only have I lost 55 pounds, I know that I’ll reach my 75lb goal sometime within the next couple of months. Just in time for summer! There were a lot of resources around the Internet that helped me to get through the past year and I have to say that I wouldn’t have gotten through this without it. While it’s not exactly a ‘weight loss’ resource, I found a site online that’s helpful in regards to general fitness supplies. When AllegroMedical initially hit the Internet, they offered up medical equipment and home health care supplies. They’ve done very well and have since expanded and are now offering Exercise & Fitness Equipment as well as Nutritional Dietary Supplements.

Their website is really easy to navigate, I found something kind of cool called Superfeet. It’s an Insole that’s great for anyone who’s into Skiing, Snowboarding, Running, Hiking & Walking. It’s great for support, balance and shock absorption. And at only $31 it’s a great price for someone who goes on as many walks as I do. I’m outside for about an hour a day, I bring Bella along with me and she’s absolutely loving all the exercise as well. She hasn’t been feeling very well for the last couple of days so she’s refused to leave the house when I have my walking-gear on but that’s OK, it’ll warm up and she’ll want to join me once she’s feeling up to it.

For those days when I’m in the house, I’ve been considering the BOSU Balance Trainer I can still get my strength training but I don’t have to head down to the gym in the complex to do it. It’s so stuffy down there, and since it’s such a small room with only 3 different exercise machines, it really gets rather boring. I can use the balance trainer in the privacy of my own room and I don’t have to worry about dealing with the really icky smell that the clubhouse is known for.

Thank goodness for the Internet.

Wedding in a Box!

Monday, March 17th, 2008

Okay, so I know it’s a little premature but as a girl (in a very happy long-term relationship) I tend to poke around the Internet when it comes to wedding related items. I know of the possible dress, where I want to hold the reception, I even have the name cards picked out, the thank you notices and just about every other key factor available, right down to the flowers. I’m a Rose person but there are so many different flowers that work well for weddings that it’s almost impossible to figure out what you’re looking for. I, however, am also a bargain shopper (third generation dollar-store queen) so when you come across links like wholesale calla lilies, you tend to pounce on the opportunity. I would pair them up with pink roses, only because red ones seem so boring to me. Add in a little babies-breath and a pretty bow and I’ve got myself a bouquet to throw at someone’s head during the reception. Sean will make it a point to avoid being the target, but who knows what stupid thing he’d decide to come up with during the most important day of our lives.

The site that I found was FiftyFlowers, they streamline the process, making it easier for the do-it-yourself bride to find the perfect flowers for her wedding. I’m someone who likes to take control of everything, I don’t understand where people get off hiring wedding planners – only to have constant complaints about them. If you want it done right, which typically means you want it done YOUR WAY, then do it yourself, you know?

The thing I like about this particular company, comes from the following quote:

FiftyFlowers offers wedding flower packages that are beautifully arranged at our flower facility according to your custom order. This product is very popular because it’s like a complete Wedding in a Box. The wedding party gets 23 pieces, including bridal bouquet, bridesmaid bouquet, corsages, boutonnieres, and table arrangements. The focal flower, accent flowers and greens are chosen by the bride.

Wedding in a Box? Man do I like that idea. Too bad everything else requires a lot of organization and intense work. :sigh:

Online Universities

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

For quite some time now I’ve been looking to go back to school and there are numerous options out there that have kept me interested but thanks to a few outside resources I was able to find out that the bulk of the schools I had in mind were nothing more than diploma scams and there isn’t one job in the US that will actually accept a degree from any of these colleges.

So I went back to the drawing board and I’ve come up with a few schools that I’m looking for an opinion on. There’s a lot of writing involved so I’ll narrow it down to the one that seems to offer the most for your dollar. Have you ever heard of capella university? Based on what I’ve read about it, it was founded in 1993 and over 20,000 students currently attend this school. It’s an online university that offers graduate online degree programs as well as bachelor’s degree programs as well. I’m looking to extend my associates and pick up a bachelors in internet technology but I’ve been having some trouble finding anything even remotely close to what I’m looking to do.

If you know anything about capella, could you give me a little 411? I’m lost.

Online Survey Software

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

I’ve been looking into a few business related resources for a friend of mine. She’s interested in trying to figure out a way to make her business more user-friendly and because of this she’s been considering taking the route of installing or purchasing a membership for online survey software. She wants to learn more from her clients and having them randomly fill out a testimonial really isn’t going to do it for her. She wants to know how her services were, if things were accomplished in a timely manor. She also wants to know about little things like how she can improve her business, what other services should she offer.

It’s important to keep in touch with your clients, both past and present, this way you can make sure they’re getting exactly what they pay for. Having a survey that they can fill out, whether required or not, is always a good way of knowing what they want and what they need out of you. If you notice something about your services being noted on more than a few occasions then you know that in the future it’s something you can work on changing. Maybe it’s something as little as a time zone difference because your clients aren’t capable of getting in touch with you over an instant message service. If you can get in touch with them it’s either really early in the morning for them, or pretty late at night. Little things that you can work on to make your business better should be something you work on from the get go.

Can you call in for vacation time when you’re self-employed?

Friday, August 24th, 2007

It’s been pretty easy for me to get side-tracked while I’m on my quest for finding a home. Knowing that we really can’t do much until we know for sure that the loan is in our pockets, we’ve been thinking of all of the possibilities. But at the same time, we’re also considering a much-needed vacation considering how hard we’ve been working lately.

VoIP for Small Business

Friday, August 24th, 2007

My main reason for purchasing a cellphone in the past was due to the fact that I didn’t really like any of my clients calling my home number. I considered this to be my business line, so to speak. Spending about $50 a month is growing to be a pain considering the phone doesn’t ring nearly as much now, as it has in the past. So I’ve been looking into a more inexpensive method through VoIP phone systems.

Free Advertising: Mailing Lists

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

An important aspect to any business is keeping in touch with your clients. I personally keep everyone in my address book but I’ve found that keeping a Mailing List of your addresses works great if you’re running special promotions, even from clients you hadn’t heard from in a while.
