Visitors, SEO & Marketing

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

I’m happy to see that Google is starting to give page ranks back. While I’m not back to my PR6, the PR3 is just as good for the time being. I do hope to get my original rank back but that’s something I’ll have to take up with them in the future. I know what I’m going to have to do in order to make that possible so I’m not too concerned with it.

In the meantime, I’ve been going through quite a few resources to help me with my SEO techniques. I’d like to properly market my portfolio. Word of mouth is always great advertising, no matter who you are, but it’s also nice to have a constant flow of unique users coming to your site thanks to major search engines and directories. I’m considering getting in touch with webmetro.com, they’re a search engine optimization company that I’ve just come across recently. I figure I’ll request a quote and see what happens from there. I’m not looking to have a PR6 on my portfolio but it would be nice to exceed the few hundred hits a day that I’m currently getting on that site. It would be nice to get up around the 1500-2000 hits a day. Those are the numbers I’m used to as far as my personal sites are concerned. I’ll admit that I’ve slacked off on maintaining them but I hope that when business slows down a bit I’ll be able to come back with good articles to get back to what I had.

I poked through WebMetro and from the introduction I saw that they combine a few different techniques to get the job done. They’ve done pretty well for themselves as well. I find it easier to trust a SEO company when they’ve got decent rankings. I’ve dealt with a few in the past that had no page rank and were in the millions as far as rankings on Alexa are concerned. If no one’s visiting you – what makes you think that they’ll visit me? I guess it depends on how you look at it though.

Search Engine Troubles

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

I do a lot of surfing around the Internet.  Valuable resources like Google open up a whole new world for everyone who uses them. I ‘ve been able to easily find the things that I’m looking for because someone did their job right when they did the SEO work on that specific account.  In some cases, however, I’ve had a pretty hard time being able to locate what I’m looking for.  As I noted in a previous entry, I’ve been searching around the Internet for the company I saw advertised on television the other night.  It’s bothering the heck out of me because I’m still unable to locate them, furthermore I’m unable to locate an A-Z listing of all dental insurance companies available in the US.   You’d think there would be a list like that somewhere, but I guess that’s something to hope for in the future.

I’ve done a lot of work with SEO, which is probably how I managed to get myself to a PR5 in very little time.  I’ve also done it for clients as well and they’ve had some pretty good success with it.  I don’t really have the time for design work anymore though so I’ve cut back on a lot of the things that I used to do.  I do still do what is asked of me, but it’s hard for me to go above and beyond the call of duty the way I have in the past.   So it’s time like these when I should really be paid for referral services, that’s for sure. I’ve outsourced numerous clients to different SEO companies around the Internet so they could get the service they’re looking for.  I came across a new one today though, chicago SEO consultants, based on their track record I may add them to my list of companies to send clients to when they’re looking for SEO work.

How often to search bots surf your site?

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

This is a question that I’m frequently asked by many of my clients, as well as those just looking for help with the subject at hand. The following article will explain why bots/spiders surf your website and why it can and will be a benefit for you. Spiders/bots are important to help towards the success of your website. Look at AGn Designs, for example, I’m a PR5 with over 10,000 hits per day thanks to bots and word of mouth. This article should break down why those numbers are important.

Backlinks are important!

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

Backlinks are important to search engines and wandering web traffic. Think of it like high school, if two people think you are cool and say it, you are not necessarily as cool as if you had 200 people thinking you are cool and saying it. It also matters who says it. If half of the people that say you are cool are your brothers and sisters or your teacher (someone who is traditionally uncool) then you are less cool than say the all star players on the team.

Is Social Media Marketing ethical?

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

Cameron Olthuis has defended the use of social media marketing as an SEO technique following Jason Calacanis’ latest statement, including the comments:

“This whole gaming of digg/Netscape/MySpace is being called SMO–social media optimization. That’s the worst thing I’ve ever heard of. Anyone who hires an SMO firm is an idiot.”

I would have to agree with Cameron on this:
