The DS is getting BORING

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

Sean bought me a DS on Valentines day this past year and I’ve been a pretty avid player of it for quite some time now.  I started off with Super Mario Brothers because that’s the game I grew up on but over time you realize that the little fat plumber (who never has any tools) is really just a boring freaking game.  So I upgraded myself to a little bit of speed and picked up Sonic Rush.  I’ve played this game to death, literally, I’m to a point now where I’m done beating my own scores and actually reverting back to the days when I knew nothing about this game just so I could get the lowest possible score to keep it interesting.

So now I need some help, I own a lot of games but most of them are mind/puzzle games.  I need some kind of action and I hate using the stylus – any recommendations could be greatly appreciated!

Setting some money aside for Christmas.

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

I have to say that I’m unhappy with the fact that Christmas makes itself known in July, by this time people are usually done paying off the gifts from the last holiday season and they’re already reminded of the ones they’re going to have to purchase over the next six months. I think it’s absurd but when it comes to the world of making money off just about everything, I can see why businesses do this. With Halloween being over with, almost as quickly as it came, I know now that Thanksgiving is just around the corner. After that is the wonderful world of Christmas and I’m stuck as to where I’m even going to go with things. It was great having a large family when I was younger and glorious presents just seemed to fall into my lap. As you get older, the whimsical experience just seems to fade. You’re now spending the money and getting very little in return, only because family members are also shopping for 20+ people for the holiday season. Naturally the kids are given more than the adults but with how well things are going this year, naturally I’m not going to stiff anyone out on things either.

I’m unsure of whether or not I’m going to even make it up to New York this year to enjoy Christmas the way I have in the past. I know that my father is working on Christmas but when the money is just that good and your daughters aren’t really around – what’s the point in staying home? I may wind up sending cards to everyone, I don’t see actual gifts as something of importance considering I rarely see these people throughout the year, but they’re still family so discounted online stores where I can load up on the coupons is really the only option.

I figure I’ll float around sites like Harriet Carter and ABC Distributing to pick up these items. They’re fairly inexpensive, but at the same time have some really nice products that do actually last quite a bit of time. I figure I could get my mothers side of the family taken care of for under $150 which won’t be easy considering I’m shopping for about 15 people. With my fathers side it’s just my aunt and my uncle so that’ll be an easier shopping trip, I may wind up going straight to the store for that though, at this point I’m unsure.

Not worth the money…

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

I sat down last night and read “If I Did It”, the book that has had people buzzing around the Internet.  I found it to be very difficult to read, based heavily on the fact that so many details that weren’t made public where actually in this book.  A dear friend of mine is a clairvoyant, and he touched the book and instantly felt sick to his stomach.  OJ did the crime, the fact that he was able to get away with it shocked the nation, and this book very obviously shows his guilt.  I’m going to side with the family, but I don’t appreciate how they’re taking it either.  They went on OPRAH just so they could get this book noticed, she isn’t even promoting the book but since it was mentioned on her show, sales went through the roof.  I think it’s absurd that one could go out of their way to be paid to write this book and not even compensate the family (something he was court ordered to do).  Now they’re only getting like eleven cents per sale or something like that.  It really is NO money at all.  So either way they’re getting screwed.

I could continue on this rant but I see myself going on for hours about it, so I’ll just say that I do NOT recommend this book to anyone.  I do not recommend even purchasing it if you’re really that interested, hope it’s in a local library and then reserve your rental copy there.  Spending the $20 that I mistakenly spent was a complete waste of money.

Thank god for keeping receipts, I wonder if I could even get my money back on this.

Increase Your Traffic

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

Recently, Google updated their Algorithm for page ranks. I used to be PR5 but now I’m bouncing between a PR3 and a PR4 thanks to their updates. I’m not the only one this update has effected though, thousands of websites on the Internet have dropped in rank. Even MySpace and they were once the number one site on the internet with a PR9. Now they’re only a 7 – this is with millions of hits a day and lord knows how many back links. This is another way that Google has screwed me out of something over the years. I used to be involved with their AdSense program but someone (later admitting to being malicious) went on a clicking spree and the $500 Google owed me magically disappeared.

So now I’m on a mission to gain more website traffic so I can bring my ranks back up. I know that the hits I have will still be consistent but it would be nice to have the statistics to show for it. I know that I don’t return comments as often as I used to but when you’re trying to maintain a design business, a hosting business, five weblogs, and a house hold – it’s not easy to sit down and return comments to the spammers that frequent my sites. I always return the comments to those who had a genuine response, typically as soon as I receive the comment (whether it be immediately after it’s posted or the following morning when I check my email).

There are numerous websites on the Internet where you can find the resources you need to bring in more website traffic. Unfortunately, not many people know what to look for when working on something like this. Getting yourself linked on the right sites could mean more hits than your bandwidth could potentially handle.  Use the resources you come across, they’ll be worth it in the end – trust me.

Why must you?

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

I was fixing a Wordpress theme for someone tonight. I don’t understand why people use the CSS that they do. Why must people remove margins and padding around the paragraphs? Do you like seeing everything bunched into one large blob? Why must you assume that the people using your theme think the same way?

The thing that bothers the crap out of me is that this was a SPONSORED theme. Someone actually paid money to get their link permanently attached to this particular theme and it’s not even that popular of a subject, it’s really a basic theme that only about 5 people (with very low PR and Alexa Ranking) are using.

For any future CSS Guru’s out there, please completely avoid the following statement:

p {margin: 0; padding: 0;}

Thank you.

Wordpress

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

For years I’ve gone through every weblog program known to man. I started off on blogger.com with the FTP support, then I graduated to Greymatter when it was the “cool thing to do”. I then moved to B2 which was my first taste of PHP based blogging. From there I played around with Movable Type but found it to be too much of a hassle to really get it to do what I needed it to. I dabbled in CuteNews for smaller sites, quickly upgrading to AcidBlog – a script I wrote quite some time ago. I’ve also gone through quite a few other PHP scripts, mainly ones found on sites like Condango and other PHP related resources.

I’ve finally settled upon Wordpress though, I honestly don’t see myself changing over to anything else. It’s rare when you can run multiple blog installations on a single MySQL database and it doesn’t interfere with anything. It’s nice when you can quickly log in and post an entry without having to alter things on the template because thousands of plugins available to you for Wordpress are now doing the work for you. And for those of you that like the “page builder” kind of a template, the ajax based sidebar options in the control panel really help you to organize everything. Even if you know nothing about designing your own template there are THOUSANDS of free ones available to meet your design requirements. It’s even great for content management. It’s one of those rare all-in-one programs that really has proven itself time and time again.

I know I’ve recommended this particular program in the past, and no I’m not being paid to push Wordpress. It’s just a solid program that I highly recommend to anyone I come across. Even someone wanting something SIMPLE where they just login and type something out. This is the best route to take.

Something funky going on…

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

Today it reached about 72 degrees, right now it’s pushing 45.  This change in weather is taking it’s toll on just about everyone.  Sean can barely breath, even Bella seems a little under the weather and I just haven’t been feeling well for the last few days.

There’s a tropical storm heading this way, not sure how much damage it’s going to do but hopefully it doesn’t linger around for too long.  We’re hoping that we’ll hear from his brother this weekend so we can head out to Ohio by Monday.  Let’s just hope that it actually happens that way or there’s going to be a very annoyed person taking over my personality for the next few days…

Ecommerce on the rise?

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

PPPI’m not sure why I’m still sitting here at 11pm but I’m sure my addiction to completing deadlines early has a lot to do with it. While waiting on a response from a client I’ve found myself floating through quite a few job posting sites such in search for a few new jobs to pick up before we actually make the move out to Ohio, this way there’s work waiting for me and it’ll help get that loan paid back much sooner than expected. I’ve noticed a rise in business leads looking for a designer for their new online store. They list their requirements on many aspects of it and they’re so in depth that you wonder why they’re incapable of finding affordable ecommerce hosting and just setting things up for themselves. I don’t quite see how it’s hard to find business hosting on the Internet if you can find yourself on a not-so-well-known freelance site looking for a designer. That’s just my take on it though.

A few listings did make sense to me though, mainly because they admitted that they knew how to use an ecommerce based software, they were just unware of how to go about designing for certain ecommerce programs. That’s something I can understand, but for those who can go to the extreme of giving you a PSD and then telling you it’s already marked up for the site, they just need someone to load it into the template boxes, you wonder what you’re actually being paid for? I’m sorry but I’ve never once taken any form of compensation other than a “Thank You” if I was just copying and pasting something for someone. However, that someone wasn’t giving me a step by step break down of how to go about using the software either. It’s kind of odd.

Anyway, I have noticed a rise in people running their own personal online stores. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that eBay just isn’t all it’s cracked up to be anymore. Sure, selling things here and there to a large market is always a great thing but when you’re limited to as how much customization you can really do with your products, then why not start up your own website to help your Internet business.

A site that’s sticking out for me at the moment is AQHost.com, they offer small business hosting with a focus on cheap ecommerce hosting. I can say that with as many home-based stores that are around these days, a company like this may do very well in this particular field. Best of luck to them.

Waiting too patiently

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

It’s been quite some time since we’ve heard from Sean’s brother.  We’ve gone ahead and sent him a letter under the assumption that he managed to misplace or damage his cell phone, something he’s known to do.  We’re just itching to get out of here so every second of not knowing what’s going on is starting to drive us insane.  The office has been cleaned up a little bit so at least it’s livable.  Sean found someone online who’s interested in taking a few computer items off our hands.  We’re getting rid of the 19″ CRT that I got with my original desktop, he’s also got a Mac that’s been scrapped for parts but has a working monitor so maybe this guy would have more use for it than we would.  I kind of wish that Sean could have just put everything back together so that I could have had the Mac but that’s ok, I’ll get my iMac soon enough in the near future.  Maybe it’ll be a Valentines day gift to myself this year – heh.
